Wine and art have many things in common : sensual pleasures, skill, individuality, diversity and a touch of hedonism. So it is not surprising that I was able to get to know Kathrin Engel via a small art detour and, after an extensive tasting of her wines, initiated a collaboration with Michael Keller.
The traditional wine-growing village of Twann has the best conditions for quality viticulture thanks to its enviable sunny location on Lake Biel and the calcareous soils at the southern foot of the Jura. Engel Keller's vines have long been managed according to organic principles . So it is obvious that the switch to certified organic wine cultivation will be realized by 2021. With this milestone, Kathrin's nature-obsessed and cheerful spirit and Michael's meticulous attention to detail are expressed in an even more exemplary way in their exemplary wine creations.
The style of the house impresses with natural clarity, character, elegance and relevance.
Chasselas (Gutedel) is the Swiss' favorite grape variety. The one from Engel Keller-Viticulteurs is mineral, full-bodied and has a complex aroma. The fresh acid structure is convincing and gives it a lot of liveliness .
The Blanc de Noir is made from red vines, in this case Pinot Noir, and is a real treat for the palate . The delicate residual sweetness is skilfully highlighted by the balanced acidity and the eye can hardly get enough of its subtle reddish shimmer.
The most important grape variety in the Three Lakes Region is and remains Pinot Noir , which is why every winemaker must be measured against this genus. The Pinot Noir Classic is pure, elegant, full-bodied and seductive in texture.
The showpiece is the Pinot Noir Barrique . It is aged for a year in masterfully selected wooden barrels and, after strict selection, achieves the popular finesse and sensitivity thanks to which this grape variety has achieved world fame and Kathrin and Michael do not have to hide behind any renowned plant .
Engel wines in the cellar make every mood brighter.
